The word is actually "Chicken out"

Chicken out is a common saying where we back off an event or invitation because were too shy or just mere anxiety.

Example:

When I saw the pamphlet about a singing tryout at the bulletin board, I gave it a try since I like singing. When I saw the judges and the crowd, and heard the beautiful voices of other candidates, I chicken out because Im afraid that something may go wrong if its my turn and everyone is better than me.
